Unexpected
Adams watched in disbelief from the hallway. What he saw made no sense. Instead of stern words or accusations, the officer shook Ernest’s hand at the end of their conversation.
They exchanged a few quiet words, and then, to Adams’s shock, Ernest stood up. The door opened, and the old bellhop walked out with no charge.
