Desire for vindication
As I spoke about my accomplishments, I could see their surprise and maybe a hint of pride, which only fueled my desire for vindication.
‘It’s been tough,’ I continued, ‘but I’ve built a stable life for myself.’ My father nodded, clearly impressed.
‘We’re proud of you,’ he said, and for the first time, it seemed genuine. Yet, beneath their congratulations, I sensed there was more to their sudden interest in my life, an unspoken motive hanging in the air.
