That evening, Deborah rolled a suitcase down the porch steps and set it beside two boxes. She loaded clothes into the back of her SUV, returned for toiletries, and taped a final carton shut.
A neighbor waved from the sidewalk and kept walking. Deborah started the engine, backed out without speaking, and turned toward the highway.
I wrote the time in my log and closed the gate behind her.
