A modern take on Munch’s The Scream
Does the young man in the background look so amazed because he has never seen a good smoke ring? Does he just let out a little scream? In any case, the picture reminds us a bit of Edvard Munch’s “The Scream”. Surely it could be a modern variant of the famous painting.
In fact, four of Munch’s paintings and one of his lithographs are called The Scream. But they all show a similar motif, in which a person is standing in the open air. The figure has its hands pressed to its face and its mouth and eyes wide open, so it is relatively similar to our photo model.
