A bat-like horror
It was about the size of Bill, with leathery wings folded tightly against its body. Its head resembled a small rodent’s, but its eyes were unnervingly large and round, glinting in the faint light.
The creature froze, just as startled as June, its small chest rising and falling rapidly.
